How to Encourage Your Child to Read More and Spend Less Time on Electronic Devices

In recent years, technology has become an increasingly important part of our lives. Our children are exposed to a variety of electronic devices, from mobile phones and tablets to televisions and computers. While these devices can be useful and entertaining, spending too much time in front of them can have negative effects on our children’s health and development.

One of the biggest dangers of spending too much time in front of screens is sedentary behavior. Children who spend too much time in front of the TV or computer are less physically active and have a higher risk of becoming overweight. Additionally, too much screen time can affect children’s sleep and lead to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. I discovered through personal experience that my kid was more aggressive and agitated when I’ve let him watch any video materials on Youtube, so I’ve cut almost any connection with that. Now he is only allowed about half an hour each week, usually at the same time interval during Sundays. Instead, we read a lot, even though it is more difficult for me and my wife, especially after a hard day at work, but quality time is more important than everything. We also play and he is allowed to listen to an audiobook, which sometimes saves us time, but also encourages his imagination.

All studies show that reading is an activity that can have positive effects on our children’s health and development. When they read, children develop their language skills, improve their memory and concentration, and develop their imagination and creativity. Additionally, reading can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve the quality of sleep.

So, how can we do it? It is very important to lead by example. The child needs to see you also reading, and not witness a couch potato. I really don’t have any sympathy for parents who used to read and now they pretend they no longer have time or drive to do it. Even on the most terrible days at work, I never fail to read with my child or next to him during our bed routine. At worst, he listens in the dark to a short audiobook for kids, I use my Kindle. We fall asleep without fail after 20 minutes. The best is to read him myself or to just tell him a story from memory. He really likes it when I tell him a story or when we recount one he already knows. Lately, he is capable of telling it by himself, even though he is only 3 years old. It is fun to watch him struggling to find the vocabulary, but I’m always there to help.

To encourage children to read, it is important to provide them with access to a variety of books and involve them in the process of choosing books. We can also read stories to them and show them that reading is a fun and relaxing activity. Here are some tips on how to get them to read from a young age:

1. Read to them every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Choose books that are appropriate for their age and that will capture their attention.

2. Make time for reading together. You can read together with them before bedtime or during the day.

3. Let them choose the books they want to read. This will make them feel involved and increase their interest in reading.

4. Discuss with your children about the books they have read. Ask them what they liked and what they didn’t like and encourage them to share their opinions.

5. Make reading fun: Use different voices and intonations for the characters in the books. You can also play games that involve books, such as riddles or word games.

6. Make reading a routine: Create a reading routine and stick to it. This will help children get used to reading and consider it a part of their daily life.

7. If possible, chose stories with rhymes, especially when they are under 5 yo, because it is easier for kids to learn and to remember them.
