10 Funny, Curious, and Least Known Things About Babies

If you love babies, you’ll love this article! In this one I’ll share with you 10 funny, curious, and least-known things about babies that will make you smile, laugh, and wonder. Did you know that babies have more bones than adults? Or that they can taste flavors in the womb? These are just some of the amazing facts that I’ll reveal today. Babies are amazing creatures that fill our lives with joy, wonder, and love. But they also have some surprising and quirky features that you may want to know if you’re a next-to-be parent or an already one.

1. Babies are born with more bones than adults. A newborn baby has about 300 bones, while an adult has only 206. This is because some of the baby’s bones are not fused yet and will grow together as they age.

2. Babies can cry in different languages. A study found that babies cry with different intonations depending on the language they hear around them. For example, French babies tend to cry with a rising pitch, while German babies cry with a falling pitch.

3. Babies can taste what their mothers eat. When a pregnant woman eats something, the flavor of the food can pass through the amniotic fluid and reach the baby’s taste buds. This way, the baby can develop a preference for certain foods before they are even born.

4. Babies have a natural diving reflex. When a baby is submerged in water, their heart rate slows down and their blood vessels constrict to conserve oxygen. They also instinctively hold their breath and close their eyes and mouths. This reflex helps them survive in case of accidental drowning.

5. Babies can sleep with their eyes open. Some babies have a habit of sleeping with their eyes partially or fully open. This is called nocturnal lagophthalmos and it is not harmful to the baby’s vision. It usually goes away by the time they are six months old.

6. Babies can recognize their mother’s voice from birth. A baby can hear sounds from inside the womb and can distinguish their mother’s voice from other voices. They can also recognize their mother’s face and smell within hours of being born.

7. Babies can laugh before they can speak. A baby’s first laugh usually happens around three or four months of age, while their first word usually happens around one year of age. Babies laugh when they find something funny, surprising, or enjoyable, such as tickling, peek-a-boo, or funny faces.

8. Babies have super strength in their fingers. A newborn baby can grip an object with enough force to support their body weight. This is called the palmar grasp reflex and it is a remnant of our evolutionary past when our ancestors used to cling to their mothers’ fur.

9. Babies can grow a mustache in the womb. Some babies develop a fine layer of hair called lanugo all over their body, including their face, while they are in the womb. This hair helps keep them warm and protects their skin from the amniotic fluid. Most of the lanugo falls off before birth, but some babies are born with it and shed it within a few weeks.

10. Babies can dream and have nightmares. Babies spend about half of their sleep time in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is the stage of sleep where we have dreams. Scientists believe that babies dream about what they experience during the day, such as sounds, colors, and emotions. However, they can also have nightmares that make them cry or scream in their sleep.
