Some people say that laughter is the best medicine, but I think that dark humor is even better. Dark humor, also known as black comedy, morbid humor, or gallows humor, is a style of comedy that makes light of subject matter that is generally considered taboo, particularly subjects that are normally serious or painful to discuss.
Dark humor appeals to me because it challenges me to think differently about the world and myself. It exposes the absurdity and hypocrisy of human nature, and forces me to confront my own fears and prejudices. It also helps me cope with the harsh realities of life, such as death, suffering, and injustice, by finding humor in them. Dark humor is not for the faint of heart, but for those who have the courage and intelligence to appreciate it.
One of my favorite dark humorists is Anthony Jeselnik, an American comedian, writer, actor, and producer. He is known for his dark comedy style, which emphasizes ironic misdirection, non sequiturs, biting insults, an arrogant demeanor, and a stage persona that frequently takes amoral or psychopathic stances.
I love Anthony Jeselnik because he is fearless and ruthless in his jokes. He does not care about being politically correct, socially acceptable, or morally sound. He does not shy away from any topic, no matter how controversial, offensive, or sensitive. He pushes the boundaries of comedy and tests the limits of the audience. He makes me laugh at things that I should not laugh at, and makes me question my own morality and sanity.
Anthony Jeselnik is not for everyone, and that is fine by me. He is not trying to please anyone, or to make anyone feel good. He is simply expressing his own twisted and brilliant vision of comedy, and I admire him for that. He is one of the most original and daring comedians of our time, and I can’t get enough of his dark humor.
If you are a fan of dark humor, or if you are curious about it, I highly recommend checking out Anthony Jeselnik’s stand-up specials. Here is a short video I made with some of his best moments. But be warned: they are not for the easily offended, the faint of heart, or the weak of stomach. They are for the lovers of dark humor, like me.
