The Winter’s Tale

Inspired by a Romanian folk tale

Once upon a time, when the world was young,

Two sisters went to fetch some wool they’d spun.

They reached a well and talked beside the brink,

But soon their spindles slipped and in they sink.

They dove into the well to find their thread,

And through the darkness, to a light, they sped.

They came upon a field of flowers bright,

And plucked some blossoms as they felt delight.

They wandered on and found an oven hot,

And took some bread that smelled of wheat and salt.

They walked some more and reached a cottage fair,

Where Winter’s Saint was waiting for them there.

She said she had their wool and they could take it,

But first they had to help her with a task.

She gave them pillows, blankets, rugs to shake it,

And as they did, the snow began to fall.

They shook them hard and made a gusty breeze,

That carried snowflakes all across the land.

And so the first winter came with cold and freeze,

And covered all the earth with white and grand.

She gave them also cloths of black and gray,

And told them they should shake them too, and fast.

They did as told and saw a dusty spray,

That turned into a stormy wind and blast.

They shook them harder and made a mighty gale,

That carried clouds and thunder all around.

And so the first storm came with rain and hail,

And darkened all the sky with gloom and sound.

The Saint thanked the sisters for their help and care,

And gave them back their wool and bid farewell.

They left her cottage and returned to where,

Their mother waited for them at the well.

They planted flowers that they brought along,

And as they did, the sun began to shine.

And so the first spring came with light and song,

And filled the world with color and with fine.

The moral of this story is to show,

That every season has its charm and role.

And though the winter may be cold and slow,

It makes us appreciate the spring’s console.
