Oblivion

I’m currently reading a book set during the time of Octavian, about some Roman legions fighting in Egypt. It suddenly hit me that more time has passed from the construction of the Great Pyramid by Khufu during the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt’s Old Kingdom (the Fourth, yes?) to the events in the book, than from the beginning of our era to now. 600 years or so more. And here we are, thinking we’re the center of the universe because we have smartphones and Wi-Fi. If our civilization were to collapse tomorrow (a very possible scenario, considering the incredible level of stupidity we’ve reached—or maybe an asteroid, a pandemic, or something), I doubt anything would remain of us except plastic and some “eternal” chemicals. Those Egyptians built something that defies millennia, while we… we can barely keep a fridge running for 10 years.
