Book Review: How to Find Happiness in Romania

I haven’t been able to finish a book in just a few hours for a while now, but I started the year off right with “Cum să fii fericit în România.” This collection of essays by various authors, each exploring the theme of finding happiness in Romania, captivated me and gave me the perfect opportunity to indulge in some serious reading. And boy, was I in the mood.

Contributions from renowned writers like Radu Paraschivescu, Gabriel Liiceanu, Andrei Pleșu, and Tatiana Niculescu did not disappoint. They delivered insightful and thought-provoking pieces that kept me engaged throughout. While I had hoped for a bit more from some of the other contributors, the overall experience was still very rewarding.

This book is not a how-to guide for achieving happiness. Instead, it’s an analysis of present-day Romania, its past, and the broader world. It’s a collection of stories that left me with many ideas, one of which is that we are prepared for anything, but not for happiness. I particularly resonated with Tatiana Niculescu’s sentiment: “Happiness is to have been born out of love, if possible, and not by chance, or in any case, for oneself and not for one’s parents’ retirement plans.”

“Cum să fii fericit în România” offers a deep and reflective journey through the complexities of finding joy in a country with a rich and tumultuous history. It’s a must-read for those interested in understanding the cultural and emotional landscape of modern Romania, but not only, also for, let’s say, East-European spirit.
